Everyday to Holiday – Turquoise and Gold by DeWitt Kendall

One of the reasons so many people rush to white dinnerware is fear that a color set will be hard to use for occasions like Christmas. Granted there are lots of choices that could be more difficult than others. A pink floral pattern might be a bit of a challenge to make work for the Holidays though but still not impossible with some thought. There are lots of other colors and many patterns that can be made to work for both everyday and for the Holidays.

In it's 'natural' environment this turquoise crackle pattern is straight-up 'Asian'. Put it a different context who would have believed it could become 'Holiday'.

Aqua is one of those colors. Aqua is one of the most popular everyday colors for dinnerware. Where red was once the most popular non-white color for dinnerware Aqua is now the most likely color consumers buy outside of basic white. The set below, if taken out of this context, is actually an Asian inspired set called Zazen. It was one of TARGET’s most popular patterns for years. There's nothing more stressful or annoying than having to undo everything on the fly with the guests already seated to make room for that ham you somehow forgot you had to leave room for. Planning it all out in advance also helps keep guests from having to eat with their elbows in a bowl of green beans because there wasn't enough spaced planned for everything.

Immerse that turquoise in gold and it takes on an entirely new life. Square gold leaf lacquered charger plates position those turquoise plates like aquamarine gemstones. Suddenly that turquoise reads more as “Tiffany Blue”. Reinforce the ‘set in gold’ theme with gold leaf accented drinkware with an etched texture that relates to a similar texture on the flatware.

If you feel the table is hurting for more Holiday you can always wear it. Whether you realize it you’re part of the tablescape.

Once you’ve got that ‘gemstone set in gold’ image going it’s important for the other elements to reinforce that theme. Folding the napkins so that they, too, appear ‘set’ like gems into the plate keeps the theme consistent.

Time to start layering the food.
